Getting to know Berlin
It was our anniversary on Friday (the big 4). Sharon treated us to an evening of babysitting and we went out for a night on the town. I was feeling a little under the weather so we kept it simple and low key.
Fritz and I rode bikes into Mitta, the center of Berlin geographically (although Berlin has no real center (or downtown) rather there are lots of neighborhoods each with their own centers.)
Berlin is also a city within a city. Throughout the city are "Hofe" or courtyards off the street that house people, restaurants, theatres, etc. Many of these have Hof after Hof with courtyards nesting three or four deep. We went to a very popular and lively one at night called Hackersher Hofe. In the third hof back was a very cute little movie theatre that showed movies in their original form. We saw "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in English with German subtitles. It was awesome. The theatre was such a great spot to see it in too. They even had a technical difficulty and had to stop the movie in the middle to change reels which ended up fitting perfectly into the surreal nature of the movie at that point. After the movie we went to a hip Pan Asian restraurant and got a taste of Berlin service from the Matre D (they are not very friendly). There is so much cool architecture here and Mita especially has really interesting stores and restaurants. This one had a live projection photo of a waterfall on the wall and the bathrooms were a design experience to say the least. After dinner we explored some of the other Hofe and had a drink on our way home. The city is so exciting and alive it was really nice to be part of it.
On Saturday they were having an open house in a Hof around the corner from Sharon's place. It is a Kultur haus and from what I can tell provides space for all sorts of different things. They had some clubs (Russians, Algerians, Africans) a live theatre, artist studios and a drumming corp to name a few. The open house had a stage with acts running all day and night and lots of different tables of food. The music was great.
